  • What is there to love about African Music?
  • by Ayokunle Joel-Taiwo

There’s so much to love about African music, it hard to sum it up considering there are different types of African music, different genre’s, different vocals, languages and also different style of music. While I only understand English and my native language, my diverse taste of music let’s me look beyond the language and connect with African music in many different ways, the first thing I love about African music is the beats, there’s a unique beat to African music, the beats don’t all sound the same, but still manages to be unique, if you like Afro beats, Makossa, Coupe Decale, Afro Fusion, Fuji, Salegy or Kapuka music then you might have an idea of what I’m talking about. The vocals is another reason why I love African music, especially women vocals, artists like Iddi Achieng of Kenya, Asa of Nigeria, Mariam of Mali (just to name a few) might just sweep you off your feet with their voice. When you can enjoy music without having a clue of what the music is about or who the artist is, that’s good music and that’s African music.
